Split by sheet or by column?

Two very different jobs share the word split, so make sure you are on the right page:

  • Split Excel (this page) — takes one workbook and writes every sheet out as its own .xlsx file, packed into a single zip. Use it when a workbook is really several reports stapled together under one file name.
  • Split Excel by column — keeps one sheet intact but breaks it into multiple files based on the values in a column you choose, for example one file per region, department, or salesperson.
  • Filter rows in Excel — when you only need one slice rather than many files, filter the rows by a condition and export just the matching records.
  • Extract unique values — not sure which values a column contains before splitting on it? List the distinct values first, then decide how to partition the data.
  • Merge Excel files — the reverse operation: combine many workbooks back into one file with each sheet preserved as its own tab.

How the export works

The workbook is parsed once, as soon as you drop it in, and the sheet list appears immediately. Each sheet is exported as a complete, valid workbook that opens on its own in Excel, LibreOffice, or Google Sheets — no shared dependencies and no broken references back to the original file.

Output files follow a predictable naming pattern: the original file name, a dash, and the sheet name, so a file named report.xlsx with sheets North and South becomes report-North.xlsx and report-South.xlsx inside one zip archive. Hidden metadata sheets used internally by the editor are excluded, and everything runs locally in your browser — your data never leaves the device.

Notes and limits

Preguntas frecuentes

Why did I get fewer files than the number of sheets?

Two common reasons: free accounts export only the first three sheets, and hidden metadata sheets are skipped automatically because they contain no user data.

Do charts and formulas survive the split?

Values, dates, and number formats are preserved in every output file. Formulas that reference other sheets are replaced by their last calculated values, since each exported workbook contains only one sheet.

Can I split only some of the sheets?

The tool always prepares every sheet in the workbook. If you only need a few of them, download the zip and delete the files you do not want — each exported workbook is fully independent.
