How to Add a Prefix or Suffix to Excel Cells Online
- Drop one .xlsx, .xlsm, or .xls workbook — everything is processed locally and never uploaded.
- Type a prefix, a suffix, or both — leave the other box empty when you only need one side.
- Keep “Only change text cells” on (the default) to leave numbers, dates, and booleans untouched; turn it off to convert them to text and wrap them as well.
- Choose whether the first row is a header — with it on (the default), header cells are never changed.
- Click Add text — every sheet is processed, then download the result as your-file-name-with-text.xlsx.
Prefix, Suffix, or Both: What Each Does
| Setup | Original cell | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Prefix only, e.g. SKU- | 1042 | SKU-1042 |
| Suffix only, e.g. kg | 123 | 123kg |
| Both, e.g. https:// and .com | example | https://example.com |
| Both boxes empty | 1042 | No change — the run button stays disabled |
When You Need This
- Adding a currency symbol such as $ or € in front of every price.
- Numbering rows with a prefix such as 001-, NO.-, or [A].
- Completing domains or links by wrapping names with https:// and .com.
- Batch-tagging labels, categories, or campaign codes with a shared prefix or suffix.
Text Cells Only vs. Every Value
By default only text cells change. Numbers stay numeric, so SUM and other formulas keep working; dates stay real dates and booleans stay TRUE/FALSE.
Turn “Only change text cells” off to stringify every non-empty value before adding text: 123 becomes “123”, TRUE becomes “true”, and dates are rendered as English date strings (such as Mon Jan 15 2024 00:00:00 GMT+0000) — the exact text depends on your browser’s time zone. These cells become plain text and can no longer be used in numeric formulas. The output is a value-level .xlsx rebuilt from your data, so cell styles, merged cells, and charts are simplified; use the online editor when formatting must be preserved.
Empty Cells Are Never Changed
Truly empty cells — null, undefined, or an empty string — are never touched, so blank space is never turned into a prefix-only fragment.
A cell containing only spaces (such as “ ”) is a non-empty text cell: it IS wrapped, becoming, for example, “# ”. If you want whitespace-only cells left alone or cleaned first, run the trim-whitespace tool before this one.
Limitations
- The same prefix and suffix apply to every matching cell in every sheet — different text per column is not supported here; use the online editor for that.
- When “text cells only” is off, dates are stringified in the browser’s English date format, not the workbook’s display format.
- Styles, formulas, merged cells, and charts are simplified in the output file.
- Encrypted workbooks (a password is required to open) cannot be read.
- Legacy .xls files are supported, but are converted to .xlsx on output.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this add-text tool really free?
Yes — 100% free, with no sign-up, no watermark, and no file limit. All processing happens in your browser.
Will my numbers stay numeric?
With the default “Only change text cells” option on, yes — numbers, dates, and booleans are untouched. Turn it off and they are converted to text together with your prefix or suffix.
What happens to empty cells?
Null and empty-string cells are skipped entirely. Cells containing only spaces are non-empty text and do get wrapped — trim them first if that is not what you want.
Can I change just one column or a selected range?
This tool applies one prefix/suffix to every matching cell on every sheet. For column-specific edits, open the file in the free online editor.
Can I add both a prefix and a suffix at once?
Yes — fill both boxes and each cell becomes prefix + original text + suffix, for example https://example.com.
How are dates written when non-text cells are included?
They are converted with JavaScript’s default string form — an English date string such as Mon Jan 15 2024 — regardless of the cell’s display format. Keep the text-only option on to preserve real dates.
Is my file uploaded to a server?
No. The workbook is parsed, transformed, and rebuilt entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Your file never leaves your device.
Which formats are supported?
.xlsx, .xlsm, and legacy .xls as input; the result is always downloaded as a modern .xlsx file.
