How to Convert Formulas to Values Online
- Drop one .xlsx, .xlsm, or .xls workbook — everything is processed locally and never uploaded.
- Click Convert formulas to values — every sheet is scanned cell by cell for formulas.
- Read the report: for each sheet it lists the formula count and how many cells will be blank because they have no cached value.
- If an amber warning appears, open the file in Excel or our online editor, let it calculate, save once, then run this tool again.
- Download the result as your-file-name-values-only.xlsx — fixed values only, with no formulas left.
What Happens to Each Cell
Inside an .xlsx file, a formula cell stores both the formula (f) and the cached value (v) that Excel calculated the last time the file was saved. This tool deletes the formula and keeps the cached value; ordinary cells are never touched.
| Cell in the original file | After conversion |
|---|---|
| Formula + cached value (typical for files opened and saved in Excel) | The formula is deleted; the cached number, text, or date stays as a fixed value |
| Formula only, no cached value (generated by a program, never calculated) | The cell becomes empty — there is no value to keep |
| Plain number, text, date, or blank cell | Kept exactly as-is, unchanged |
Nothing is recalculated: the number already stored in the file is what you get. A formula showing 5 on screen therefore becomes the constant 5 — even if its inputs would give a different answer today.
When You Need This
- Freezing the final result of a report or budget so the numbers cannot shift when the file is reopened later.
- Locking references before moving, renaming, or splitting sheets, so links do not collapse into #REF! errors.
- Sending the table to clients, colleagues, or downstream systems that need the data but not your formula logic.
- Importing into systems that accept constant values only, or pasting into forms and web pages that strip formulas.
- Keeping a value-only snapshot for the archive while you keep adjusting formulas in the original workbook.
Important: Formulas Without a Cached Value Become Blank
Files generated by programs, scripts, or third-party libraries — and never opened, calculated, and saved in Excel (or a compatible spreadsheet app) — often contain no cached values. After conversion every formula cell in such a file would be blank. Open the file first in Excel or our online editor, wait for recalculation, save it once, and only then run this tool.
- This tool never computes formulas itself — it only reads the result already stored in the file.
- Check the per-sheet report after processing: a “without cached value” count above 0 means cells were left empty.
- If you want to keep the formulas and merely prevent edits, use worksheet protection instead — this tool is not for that.
Removing Formulas vs Protecting a Worksheet
Protecting a sheet does not delete anything — it only restricts editing, and the formulas keep calculating. This tool removes the formulas entirely. They solve different problems.
| Feature | Formulas to values (this tool) | Worksheet protection |
|---|---|---|
| Formulas kept? | No — all removed | Yes |
| Cell values | Frozen at the last cached result | Recalculated live by the formula |
| Password | Not needed | A protection password can be set |
| Styling | Rebuilt at value level; styles simplified | Fully preserved |
| Best for | Sharing, freezing results, preventing broken links | Stopping accidental edits to formulas or layout |
Frequently Asked Questions
Are the formulas deleted permanently?
Yes — the output file contains constant values only. Keep the original workbook if you may need to edit the formulas later.
Why are some formula cells empty after conversion?
Those cells held a formula but no cached value. This is common in files generated by software and never opened or saved in Excel. Open the file, let it calculate, save once, and run the tool again.
Does this tool recalculate my formulas?
No. It performs no calculation at all — it keeps only the last result stored in the file, so volatile or not-yet-saved results cannot be produced.
What is the difference from protecting a sheet?
Protection keeps the formulas, blocks editing, and preserves styles. This tool deletes the formulas outright and writes a value-level workbook.
Will number formats and dates survive?
Values and dates are preserved accurately, but the output is rebuilt from values, so fonts, colors, column widths, and other styling are simplified.
Is my file uploaded to a server?
No. Parsing, counting, and rebuilding all happen in your browser with JavaScript. Your file never leaves your device.
Which formats are supported?
.xlsx, .xlsm, and legacy .xls as input; the result is always downloaded as a modern .xlsx file.
