Understanding the XLSX format
XLSX is the modern compressed Open XML format with support for more than one million rows. XLS is the legacy binary format with a 65,536-row limit and broader compatibility with older software. Not sure which format you have? Import it and the editor will detect it automatically.
A .xlsx file is actually a ZIP archive of XML documents: the workbook structure, worksheets, styles, and shared strings are stored as separate parts. That is why a damaged xlsx can sometimes be repaired by unpacking it, and why a browser-based editor can read and write the format without any server involved.
This editor preserves formulas, cell styles, number formats, merged cells, frozen panes, conditional formatting, data validation, tables, hyperlinks, notes, and images when you import and re-export. The one exception is VBA macros: .xlsm files are converted to macro-free .xlsx on import.
Tip: if you only need the data out of a spreadsheet — for example to feed a database or another system — export as CSV instead of XLSX. You can do that here with one click.
Why choose an online XLSX editor?
• Free to use with no registration.
• Works in a browser with no installation.
• Files are processed locally and never uploaded.
• Exports open directly in Microsoft Excel and WPS.
• The editor itself imposes no row-count limit; very large workbooks depend on your device memory.
• You can also create a brand-new workbook from scratch and export it as .xlsx — no existing file needed.
