Frequently Asked Questions

Where are images stored inside an Excel file?

An .xlsx file is a ZIP archive, and embedded pictures live in its xl/media/ folder as ordinary image files (image1.png, image2.jpeg, …). This tool reads that folder directly and gives you the original files.

Does extracting reduce image quality?

No. Images are copied out byte-for-byte without any re-encoding or recompression, so resolution and quality are identical to the originals embedded in the workbook.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Extraction runs entirely in your browser. Your spreadsheet and its images never leave your device.

Can I extract images from an old .xls file?

The legacy .xls binary format stores images differently. First save the workbook as .xlsx using Excel, LibreOffice, or our online editor, then extract from the .xlsx.
