How to Remove Special Characters from Excel Online
- Drop one .xlsx, .xlsm, or .xls workbook — it is parsed and cleaned locally and never uploaded.
- Choose what to keep: spaces and line breaks (on by default), common punctuation such as commas and currency signs (on by default), and type any extra symbols that must stay.
- Click Remove special characters — every text cell on every sheet is scanned code point by code point.
- Read the report — each sheet shows how many cells were cleaned, plus a workbook total.
- Download the result as your-file-name-cleaned.xlsx, or process another file.
How It Works
This tool reads your .xlsx workbook in the browser — a ZIP of OOXML XML parts — and loads every sheet into an in-memory array-of-arrays model. For each text cell it walks the string one Unicode code point at a time: Unicode letters (\p{L}, including hanzi, kana, hangul and accented Latin) and numbers (\p{N}, including full-width digits) are always kept; spaces and line breaks stay when the option is on, though tabs and the BOM are dropped as control characters even then; a small whitelist of common punctuation and currency signs can be kept on request; and any characters you type into the additional-keep field override the defaults. Everything else — emoji, pilcrow ¶, copyright ©, trademark ™, dingbats like ★ — is stripped. Numbers, dates, booleans and empty cells pass through untouched. The cleaned model is then rebuilt as a fresh .xlsx ZIP and downloaded. The whole round-trip runs locally in JavaScript; no byte is uploaded.
Your file never leaves your device — processing is 100% in-browser.
Compared to Nested SUBSTITUTE Formulas
Excel’s in-cell way to strip characters is to nest SUBSTITUTE formulas — =SUBSTITUTE(SUBSTITUTE(SUBSTITUTE(A1,char1,""),char2,""),char3,"") — one layer per character. That works for a short known list, but each formula cleans only one column, the character set is hard to exhaust, and you still need to paste-as-values to finalize. This tool scans every text cell on every sheet in one pass, with keep-options that already cover letters, numbers, spaces, common punctuation and any extra symbols you name.
| Approach | Where your file goes | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| This tool | Nowhere — processed in your browser | Free, no sign-up, no size cap, batch-friendly |
| Nested SUBSTITUTE formulas | Stays on your disk | Manual, one column per formula, hard to cover all chars |
What Gets Removed and What Stays
Cleaning applies to text cells only. A character is removed only when it is neither a Unicode letter or number nor covered by one of the keep options. Examples with the default settings (spaces and punctuation kept):
| Original text cell | Cleaned cell | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| Acme™ Corp | Acme Corp | ™ symbol removed, space kept |
| Hi 👋 | Hi | emoji removed, trailing space kept |
| Price: 50€ | Price: 50€ | punctuation and € sign kept |
| Q1¶Q2 | Q1Q2 | pilcrow mark removed |
| café 北京 カナ | café 北京 カナ | accented, Chinese and Japanese letters are letters |
| 123 | 123 | full-width digits are numbers |
| a b | ab | tab removed even when spaces are kept |
| line1 line2 | line1 line2 | line break kept; removed if Keep spaces is off |
Turning Keep punctuation off also removes commas and periods inside text such as a text-formatted “1,000.00”. Real numeric cells are never affected. If a cell consists entirely of removed characters (for example ★☆¶), it becomes an empty string.
When You Need This
- Preparing a workbook for import into an ERP, accounting package, or data warehouse whose importer rejects emoji and control characters.
- Cleaning exported customer or mailing lists before loading them into an email or CRM system.
- Fixing text pasted from PDFs or web pages that carries tab markers, ¶ paragraph marks, soft hyphens, or invisible control symbols.
- Normalizing product names and addresses from several suppliers into one import-safe character set.
- Removing emoji and decorative symbols from reports before converting them to CSV or SQL.
Unicode Letters and Non-Text Cells
Chinese hanzi, Japanese kana and kanji, Korean hangul, accented Latin letters (é, ñ, ü), and every other Unicode letter category (\p{L}) count as letters and are never deleted — this tool does not reduce your text to ASCII.
Number cells, dates, booleans, and empty cells are not text and are passed through untouched. Only string cells are scanned, so a real date or a numeric 1000 keeps its value and type.
Cells that already contain nothing to remove keep their value and are never counted as changed. Empty sheets are preserved as well, and internal editor metadata sheets are filtered out automatically.
Limitations
- Cell styles, column widths, merged cells, charts, and formulas (saved as their cached values) are simplified in the rebuilt .xlsx.
- Tabs and other control characters are always removed; type a control character into Additional characters to keep only if you deliberately need it.
- Encrypted workbooks (a password is required to open them) cannot be read.
- Legacy .xls files are supported but are converted to .xlsx on output.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this special-character cleaner really free?
Yes — 100% free, with no sign-up, no watermark, and no file limit. All processing happens in your browser.
Which characters count as “special”?
Anything that is not a Unicode letter or number: emoji and pictographs, dingbats and decorative marks (★, ✓), copyright and trademark symbols (©, ™, ®), pilcrow and paragraph marks, and invisible control characters. Common punctuation and currency signs stay when Keep punctuation is on.
Will my Chinese, Japanese, or Korean text be deleted?
No. Hanzi, kana, kanji, and hangul belong to the Unicode letter category (\p{L}) and are always kept, along with accented Latin letters. Cleaning never reduces text to ASCII.
Are numbers, dates, and booleans affected?
No — only text cells are scanned. Number cells, real date cells, booleans, and empty cells pass through unchanged and keep their type. A string that looks like a number is text and is cleaned like any other text.
How do I keep a symbol that is removed by default?
Type it into the Additional characters to keep field. For example, entering #@* keeps those three symbols everywhere, even if Keep punctuation is off. Every character you list is kept verbatim.
Are spaces and line breaks removed?
With Keep spaces enabled (the default), ordinary spaces and line breaks stay; tabs are always removed because they are control characters. Uncheck the option to strip spaces and line breaks as well.
Is my file uploaded to a server?
No. The workbook is parsed, cleaned, and rebuilt entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Your file never leaves your device.
Does it support encrypted files and legacy .xls?
A workbook that demands a password before opening is genuinely encrypted and cannot be read without it. Legacy .xls files open fine, but the cleaned result is always downloaded as a modern .xlsx.
