Two Jobs in One Tool: Reorder and Extract

Suppose the original sheet is A Name · B Email · C Phone · D Notes. Here is what each setting produces:

How to Reorder or Extract Excel Columns Online

  1. Drop one .xlsx, .xlsm, or .xls workbook — it is parsed locally and never uploaded.
  2. The tool reads the first sheet’s header row and lists every column as “A — Header name”.
  3. All columns start ticked in their original order. Use the ↑ / ↓ buttons to move a column within the ticked sequence.
  4. Untick a column to exclude it — it greys out and leaves the order; re-ticking appends it to the end.
  5. Choose what happens to unticked columns: “Keep unselected columns” (on by default) appends them after the selected ones in their original order; switch it off to extract only the ticked columns.
  6. Click Reorder columns — the same positions are applied to every sheet — then download your-file-name-reordered.xlsx.

How It Works

The tool parses your .xlsx, .xlsm, or .xls in the browser with SheetJS and loads each worksheet as a raw array-of-arrays — cell values only, dates kept as Date objects. For every sheet it builds a column map from the order you set: the ticked column indexes in their new sequence, with the unticked ones appended in original order when “Keep unselected columns” is on. Each row is then rewritten by pulling its cells out in that mapped order, and jagged rows have their missing cells filled as null. The restructured arrays are serialized back through SheetJS as a fresh OOXML package and handed to your browser as a .xlsx download. The same column positions apply to every sheet; narrower sheets skip out-of-range positions automatically. The whole round-trip runs locally — no byte leaves your device.

Your file never leaves your device — processing is 100% in-browser.

When You Need This

  • An import or export system demands a fixed column order (for example email before name), but your sheet is arranged the other way.
  • You only need a few columns for a mail merge or report and want to drop everything else.
  • Two systems expect different column orders and you do not want to move columns by hand with copy and paste.
  • You want key columns moved to the front (A, B) for reviewers, with the remaining columns trailing.
  • The same column restructuring has to apply to every sheet of a multi-sheet workbook in one pass.

Applied by Position to Every Worksheet

Columns are matched by position, never by header text: column A in the picker is the first column of every worksheet — even if that sheet uses headers in another language or has no header row at all.

Narrower sheets are trimmed automatically: a selected position that does not exist in a sheet is skipped only there, while the other selected columns still apply. Completely empty sheets are passed through untouched and marked “skipped” in the report.

Formatting Notes

The output is a value-level .xlsx rebuilt from your data: cell styles, column widths, merged cells, and charts are simplified, and formulas are saved as their last computed value. If you need formatting kept, open the file in our online editor and move the columns there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this column reorder tool really free?

Yes — 100% free, with no sign-up, no watermark, and no file limit. Everything runs in your browser.

Are columns matched by their header names?

No. Columns are matched by position: the index sequence you set is applied to every worksheet, regardless of its header text or language. You can rename headers freely without affecting the column mapping.

What happens to the columns I leave unticked?

With “Keep unselected columns” switched on (the default), they are appended after the selected columns in their original order. Switch it off and only the ticked columns remain — that is extract mode.

My other sheets have fewer columns. Is that a problem?

No. Each sheet uses its own width: a selected position that does not exist in a narrower sheet is skipped there automatically, while the rest of the mapping still applies. Completely empty sheets pass through untouched.

Will formatting and formulas be preserved?

The output is rebuilt from cell values, so styles, column widths, merged cells, and charts are simplified, and formulas are saved as their last calculated value. Use the online editor to move columns with formatting intact.

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. The workbook is parsed, restructured, and rebuilt entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Your file never leaves your device.

Which formats are supported, and what about encrypted files?

.xlsx, .xlsm, and legacy .xls on input; the result always downloads as .xlsx. A workbook that requires a password to open is genuinely encrypted and cannot be read.
