How to View an Excel File Online

  1. Drop a .xlsx, .xlsm, .xls or .csv file into the viewer — or click to browse your device.
  2. The file is parsed locally in your browser; nothing is uploaded to any server.
  3. Switch between sheet tabs to explore each worksheet.
  4. Scroll through the preview table — large files are truncated to the first 200 rows and 50 columns for speed.

How It Works

This viewer uses SheetJS, a mature open-source library, to read spreadsheet files directly in your browser. The file is loaded into memory, parsed into a lightweight preview model, and rendered as a plain HTML table. Because everything happens on your device, your data stays private and the tool works even on slow or restricted networks.

Encrypted files that demand a password before opening cannot be read by this viewer. The password is the decryption key — without it, no honest tool can display the contents.

Supported Formats

Excel Macro-Enabled Workbook.xlsmMacros are ignored for safe read-only preview

Limitations

  • Read-only preview — you cannot edit, sort, filter, or save changes.
  • Cell styles, colors, merged regions, and column widths are simplified for a uniform table layout.
  • Large files are truncated to the first 200 rows and 50 columns per sheet.
  • Charts, images, pivot tables, and conditional formatting are not rendered.
  • Password-protected (encrypted) files require the password to open.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this Excel viewer really free?

Yes — 100% free, with no sign-up, no watermarks, and no file limits. All processing happens in your browser.

Does my file get uploaded to a server?

No. The file is read and rendered entirely in your browser with JavaScript. It never leaves your device.

Can I view password-protected files?

Only if the protection is an editing lock (e.g., sheet protection). If the file demands a password before showing any content, it is genuinely encrypted and cannot be previewed without that password.

What happens with large files?

For speed and memory safety, each sheet is limited to the first 200 rows and 50 columns. A truncation notice is shown when this limit is hit.

Will formatting look the same as in Excel?

No. This is a simplified preview: fonts, colors, borders, and merged cells are flattened into a clean table. Use the full editor if you need exact formatting.

Can I switch between sheets?

Yes. Sheet tabs appear above the preview table; click any tab to switch instantly.

Why does a date look different from what Excel shows?

Dates are rendered in ISO format (yyyy-mm-dd) for clarity. The underlying value is unchanged; only the display format differs.

Can I edit the file here?

No — this is a read-only viewer. For editing, use our free online Excel editor linked below.
