How to Convert Markdown to Excel Online

  1. Drop one or more .md, .markdown or .txt files — everything is processed locally and never uploaded.
  2. Click Convert to Excel — every pipe table in the text is detected and parsed.
  3. Check the report — each result row lists the worksheets that were created.
  4. Download the .xlsx file — a single file downloads directly; multiple files come back as a ZIP.

How the Parser Reads Your Tables

The parser scans for consecutive lines that start with a pipe character and treats each block as one table. Rows are split on unescaped pipes only — a \| inside a cell stays part of the cell and is restored to a literal |. Cells containing <br> tags get real line breaks back, and surrounding whitespace is trimmed.

Separator rows — the | --- | or | :---: | lines — and any alignment colons are recognized and never written into the data. The first row of the table is kept as-is as the first row of the worksheet.

Limitations

  • Only GFM pipe tables are recognized — HTML tables, indented tables and ASCII grids are ignored.
  • All values are written as text; numeric-looking cells are not auto-converted to numbers.
  • Inline styles such as **bold** or *italic* are kept as literal characters.
  • Files without any pipe table report "no tables found" instead of producing an empty workbook.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this Markdown to Excel converter free?

Yes — 100% free with no sign-up, no watermark and no file limit. All parsing and workbook building happens in your browser.

Which Markdown tables are supported?

GitHub-Flavored Markdown pipe tables — the kind that start with | and use a | --- | separator row. HTML tables and ASCII drawings are not converted.

What happens to the | --- | separator row?

It is detected and skipped. Alignment colons (like :---: or ---:) are also ignored, so they never appear as data in your spreadsheet.

How are escaped pipes (\|) handled?

An escaped pipe is treated as part of the cell content and restored to a literal | character in the Excel cell — the column layout stays correct.

What about <br> tags inside cells?

They are converted back into real line breaks inside the cell, so multi-line Markdown cells become multi-line Excel cells.

Will my file be uploaded to a server?

No. The text is read and the workbook is generated entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Your file never leaves your device.

Can I convert several files at once?

Yes. Drop multiple .md or .txt files and download the .xlsx results together as a single ZIP archive.

Why does it say no tables were found?

The text contains no lines starting with |. Check that your tables use the standard GFM pipe syntax and that the rows were not reformatted by an editor.
