How to Remove Empty Rows from Excel Online
- Drop one .xlsx, .xlsm, or .xls workbook — processing happens entirely in your browser and the file is never uploaded.
- Choose how an empty row is detected: strictly empty cells, or whitespace-only rows as well (the default).
- Keep “First row is a header — always keep it” on (the default) so the header row is preserved unconditionally and never judged.
- Click Remove empty rows: every sheet is scanned, matching rows are deleted, and surviving rows keep their original order.
- Download the result as your-file-name-no-empty-rows.xlsx and review the before/after counts for each sheet.
What Counts as an Empty Row
A row is deleted only when every cell across its full width is empty — a single value, formula result, date, or number anywhere in the row keeps it. Two detection modes are available.
| Cell content | Strict mode (off) | Whitespace mode (on, default) |
|---|---|---|
| null / undefined / empty string | Deleted | Deleted |
| Spaces only (" ") | Kept — the cell holds text | Deleted |
| Tabs, non-breaking or full-width spaces | Kept | Deleted |
| 0, dates, formulas with a result | Kept | Kept |
The output is a value-level .xlsx rebuilt from your data: the AOA rewrite simplifies or drops original cell styles, column widths, merged cells, and charts. If formatting must stay intact, open the file in our online editor and delete the rows there instead.
When You Need This
- Exports from CRM, analytics, or accounting systems that insert separator blank rows.
- CSV or plain-text data pasted into Excel that leaves rows full of stray spaces.
- Reports full of whitespace-only rows that look blank but break sorting, filters, and pivot tables.
- Preparing a clean import file where empty records trigger validation errors.
This Tool vs Deleting Rows in the Online Editor
| Feature | This tool | Online editor |
|---|---|---|
| Effort | One click across every sheet | Manual selection on each sheet |
| Whitespace-only rows | Caught with one checkbox | Found manually, often via filters |
| Header protection | Kept automatically | Your own responsibility |
| Cell formatting | Simplified (values only) | Fully preserved |
| Report | Per-sheet removed counts | None |
Limitations
- Only fully empty rows are removed — empty columns, partial rows, and rows holding hidden spaces in strict mode are untouched.
- Hidden rows are still judged by their cell values; hiding a row does not protect it.
- Formatting, formulas (written out as cached values), and charts are simplified in the rebuilt file.
- Encrypted workbooks (a password is required to open) cannot be read.
- Legacy .xls is accepted as input; the result is always written as .xlsx.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this empty-row remover really free?
Yes — 100% free, with no sign-up, no watermark, and no file limit. Everything is processed in your browser.
What counts as an empty row?
A row whose every cell is empty across the full width of the sheet. With whitespace mode on (the default), rows containing only spaces, tabs, non-breaking, or full-width spaces count too. The number 0 and dates are never empty.
Can my header row be deleted?
No, with “First row is a header — always keep it” enabled (the default), the first row of every sheet is kept unconditionally and never judged.
A row looks empty but was not removed — why?
It most likely contains spaces or invisible characters. Enable “Treat whitespace-only rows as empty” and run it again.
Are hidden empty rows removed too?
Yes. Detection only looks at cell values, so a hidden row is treated exactly like a visible one.
Will my formatting and formulas be preserved?
The output is rebuilt from cell values, so styles, merged cells, and charts are simplified, and formulas are written out as their cached values. Use the online editor when formatting matters.
