How to Remove All Hyperlinks from an Excel File Online

  1. Drop one or more .xlsx or .xlsm workbooks — everything is processed locally and never uploaded.
  2. Click Remove hyperlinks — external links and internal jumps are stripped automatically.
  3. Check the report — each file lists the sheets it was cleaned from by name.
  4. Download the result — a single file downloads directly; multiple files come back as a ZIP.

Two Kinds of Links, Both Removed

Excel stores hyperlinks in two different ways, and a workbook usually mixes both. This tool counts and removes every one of them.

Link typeHow it is storedRemoved here
External URL (opens a website)Sheet entry + external relationshipYes
Internal jump (cell or place in this file)Sheet entry with a location attributeYes
The blue underlined textOrdinary cell formattingKept — text and colors stay
Formulas that build links (HYPERLINK)Cell formula, not a stored linkUntouched

How Link Removal Works Inside the File

An .xlsx workbook is a ZIP archive of XML parts. Hyperlinks live in a <hyperlinks> block inside each sheet’s XML; external URLs additionally point to a relationship marked TargetMode="External" in the sheet’s .rels file. Removing only the visible entries would leave dead references behind, so this tool deletes both halves consistently.

Your file never leaves your device. The archive is unpacked, edited, and repacked entirely in browser memory — there is no upload step at all.

Compared to Excel’s Built-In Removal

Excel itself offers ways to strip hyperlinks, but they all work per selection and per sheet: right-click → Remove Hyperlinks only affects the selected range of the active sheet, so a ten-sheet workbook means repeating select, right-click, confirm ten times — and the leftover blue underlined formatting has to be cleared separately. This tool cleans every sheet of every dropped file in one pass and leaves the cell text untouched.

Why Remove Links Before Sharing?

  • Safety — pasted content can carry tracking URLs or redirects you never noticed; recipients should not be one click away from them.
  • Privacy — internal jumps reveal hidden sheets, staging areas, and working notes inside your workbook.
  • Longevity — links rot; a report that must be readable in five years should not depend on them.
  • Clean printouts and PDFs — no accidental clicks, no blue clutter.

Limitations

  • .xlsx and .xlsm only — legacy .xls (Excel 97–2003) is a binary format; convert it to .xlsx first with our batch converter.
  • File-open encryption cannot be processed — if Excel asks for a password before opening, no honest tool can read the file.
  • HYPERLINK() formulas are left in place — delete the formula column separately if you want those gone too.
  • The text formatting left behind (blue, underlined) can be cleared in Excel with one click if you care about the styling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this Excel hyperlink remover really free?

Yes — 100% free, with no sign-up, no watermark, and no file limit. All processing happens in your browser.

Will the cell text survive after removing the links?

Yes. Only the clickable link is removed; the visible text, numbers, and formulas in each cell stay untouched.

Are internal links removed too, or only website URLs?

Both. Jumps to other cells or sheets inside the workbook are sheet entries just like external URLs, and all of them are removed.

What about HYPERLINK() formulas?

They are not stored hyperlinks but formulas, so they stay. Overwrite or delete those cells separately if you want the formulas gone.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The archive is opened, edited, and repacked entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing is transmitted anywhere.

Does it work with .xlsm files?

Yes. The cleaned copy is returned as .xlsm with your VBA macros preserved and intact.

Can I clean several workbooks at once?

Yes. Drop multiple files; each is processed in one pass and the results download together as a ZIP.

Why does the text still look like a link (blue, underlined)?

The color and underline are ordinary cell formatting, which this tool deliberately keeps. Select the cells and clear formats in Excel if you want plain text.
