Rows Become Columns: Before and After

Transposing swaps the two axes of a sheet. The cell at row 1, column 2 moves to row 2, column 1, and so on for every cell. A 3×2 sheet (3 rows, 2 columns) becomes a 2×3 sheet:

Before — 3 rows × 2 columnsAfter — 2 rows × 3 columns
Name, CityName, Ada, Leo
Ada, ParisCity, Paris, Rome
Leo, Rome

The old first column (Name, Ada, Leo) becomes the new first row, and the old second column (City, Paris, Rome) becomes the new second row. Headers, numbers, dates, and empty cells all travel with their values.

How to Transpose Excel Rows and Columns Online

  1. Drop one .xlsx, .xlsm, or .xls workbook — everything is processed locally and never uploaded.
  2. No options are needed: as soon as a file is selected, the Transpose button is enabled.
  3. Click Transpose rows and columns — every sheet is flipped in turn.
  4. Check the report — each sheet lists its dimensions before and after, e.g. Sales: 3×2 → 2×3.
  5. Download the result as a clean .xlsx file named your-file-name-transposed.xlsx.

How It Works

This tool reads your workbook in the browser with SheetJS, turning every worksheet into a plain two-dimensional array of cell values — text, numbers, booleans, and dates keep their type. Each array is then flipped along its main diagonal, output[i][j] = source[j][i], so every row becomes a column and every column becomes a row. Ragged rows are first padded with null cells to the widest row so the result is always a clean rectangle, and empty sheets stay empty. The flipped arrays are repacked into a fresh .xlsx by SheetJS and downloaded. The whole loop — parse, transpose, repackage — runs in JavaScript inside your browser; no byte ever touches a server.

Your file never leaves your device — processing is 100% in-browser.

Compared to Excel’s Paste Special → Transpose

Excel’s built-in route is to copy a range, right-click the destination, choose Paste Special, and tick Transpose. This tool skips every one of those steps and flips the whole sheet at once.

When You Need to Transpose

  • Data arrived pasted in the wrong direction — labels run across a row when you need them down a column (or vice versa).
  • A report or pivot export has time periods across columns and you need them as rows for filtering or a chart.
  • You are feeding a system that expects one record per row, but the source spreadsheet stores records side by side.
  • You want to compare two lists that were laid out in opposite directions.

A very wide sheet becomes a very tall one after transposing — and the reverse. Excel worksheets are capped at 1,048,576 rows and 16,384 columns. A sheet with more than 16,384 rows cannot be transposed, because it would need more than 16,384 columns; trim it before transposing.

What Moves and What Does Not

Every value is carried to its mirrored position: text, numbers, booleans, and dates keep their type, and blank cells stay blank. Sheets whose rows have different lengths (ragged data) are first padded with null cells to the widest row, exactly as Excel shows empty cells beyond the used range.

Empty sheets are left empty, sheet order and sheet names are preserved, and internal editor metadata sheets (names starting with _) are ignored.

The output is rebuilt from cell values only: cell styles, column widths, merged cells, charts, and formulas are not carried over — formulas land in the file as their last calculated values. If you need to keep formatting, open the file in our online editor and transpose there.

Limitations

  • Formatting, merged cells, charts, and formulas are simplified or dropped in the output file.
  • The result must fit the Excel grid: at most 1,048,576 rows and 16,384 columns after transposing.
  • Encrypted workbooks (a password is required to open) cannot be read.
  • Legacy .xls files are supported as input, but the result is always written as .xlsx.
  • All sheets are transposed; transposing selected sheets or ranges is not offered here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this Excel transpose tool really free?

Yes — 100% free, with no sign-up, no watermark, and no file limit. All processing happens in your browser.

What does transposing an Excel sheet do?

It swaps the axes: every row becomes a column and every column becomes a row. A sheet with 3 rows and 2 columns becomes a sheet with 2 rows and 3 columns, with every value moved to its mirrored position.

Will my formatting and formulas be preserved?

No — the output is rebuilt from cell values, so styles, column widths, merged cells, and charts are simplified, and formulas are written as their last calculated values. Use the online editor if formatting must be kept.

What happens to blank cells and uneven rows?

Blank cells stay blank. Rows of different lengths are padded with empty cells to the widest row before transposing, so the result is always a clean rectangular sheet.

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. The workbook is parsed, transposed, and rebuilt entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Your file never leaves your device.

Does it work with encrypted files?

No. A workbook that demands a password before opening is genuinely encrypted and cannot be read without it.

How large a sheet can be transposed?

The transposed sheet must fit the Excel limit of 1,048,576 rows by 16,384 columns. A sheet wider than 16,384 columns transposes fine (it becomes tall), but a sheet taller than 16,384 rows would become too wide — remove extra rows first.

Which formats are supported?

.xlsx, .xlsm, and legacy .xls on input. The result is always downloaded as a modern .xlsx file.
