How to Remove Line Breaks from Excel Cells Online

  1. Drop one .xlsx, .xlsm, or .xls workbook — everything is processed on your device and nothing is uploaded.
  2. Pick a mode: Replace with a space (the default) keeps words apart; Delete completely joins the text directly.
  3. Click Remove line breaks — every sheet is scanned and all Unicode line breaks are covered: LF, CR, CRLF, NEL, U+2028, and U+2029.
  4. Review the report — each sheet lists how many cells were updated, with a grand total.
  5. Download the result as your-file-name-one-line.xlsx.

Delete Completely vs Replace with a Space

A manual line break sits, invisibly, between two parts of a cell’s content. The two modes differ only in what takes its place.

In Replace mode a Windows CRLF pair counts as one break and becomes a single space, so CRLF text never produces double spaces.

When You Need This

  • CSV and system imports: an embedded newline makes one field spill across several rows — flatten cells before importing.
  • Mail merge and labels: Word and email tools treat a line break inside a cell as a paragraph break, which breaks templates.
  • Address and shipping data: street, city, and postcode often live on separate Alt+Enter lines, but labels and carriers need one line.
  • Copy-paste cleanup: text pasted from PDFs, web pages, and terminals often carries CR, LF, NEL, or Unicode line separators.

Manual Line Breaks vs Wrap Text

Turning on Wrap Text only folds long text visually for display — no newline character is stored in the cell, so this tool correctly leaves it alone. Only real, manual line breaks inserted with Alt+Enter (Char 10 / Char 13), plus the rare NEL, U+2028, and U+2029 separators, are removed. To unwrap visually, just turn off Wrap Text in Excel.

What Is and Isn’t Changed

  • Only text cells are touched. Numbers, dates, booleans, and empty cells stay exactly as they are.
  • All six line-break characters are covered: LF (U+000A), CR (U+000D), CRLF, NEL (U+0085), U+2028, and U+2029.
  • Sheets with no matching cells are reported as 0 updated; completely empty sheets are kept.
  • The output is a value-level .xlsx: styles, column widths, merged cells, and charts are simplified, and formulas land as their cached values.
  • Encrypted workbooks (a password is required to open them) cannot be read.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the two modes?

Delete completely removes the break and the gap: “a” plus a break plus “b” becomes “ab”. Replace with a space turns each break into one normal space (“a b”), and a CRLF pair produces only a single space.

Does this remove the automatic wrapping from Wrap Text?

No. Wrap Text only changes how a long cell is displayed; it stores no newline character. This tool deletes only real line breaks entered with Alt+Enter.

Which line-break characters are removed?

All six: Unix LF (U+000A), classic Mac CR (U+000D), Windows CRLF, plus the Unicode NEL (U+0085), line separator (U+2028), and paragraph separator (U+2029).

Are numbers and dates affected?

No. Only string cells are processed; numbers, dates, booleans, blank cells, and formulas (kept as their cached values) are untouched.

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. The workbook is parsed and rebuilt entirely in your browser with JavaScript, so your file never leaves your computer.

Which formats are supported?

.xlsx, .xlsm, and legacy .xls. The result is always downloaded as a modern .xlsx named your-file-name-one-line.xlsx.

Will my formatting be preserved?

The output is rebuilt from cell values, so styles, merges, and charts are simplified. If formatting matters, use Find & Replace (Ctrl+J) in the online editor or desktop Excel instead.
