How to Remove Duplicate Rows from Excel Online
- Drop one .xlsx, .xlsm, or .xls workbook — everything is processed locally and never uploaded.
- Choose whether the first row is a header. With the option on (the default), the header row is always kept and never compared against data rows.
- Click Remove duplicates — every sheet is scanned and only the first occurrence of each row is kept.
- Check the report — each sheet lists its row count before and after, plus the number of duplicates removed.
- Download the result as a clean .xlsx file named your-file-name-deduped.xlsx.
How Duplicate Detection Works
Two rows are duplicates only when every cell matches across the full width of the sheet — text, numbers, and dates alike. Values are normalized before comparison (dates become ISO timestamps, empty cells become null), so a date displayed as 1/15/2024 still matches the same date displayed as 15-Jan.
Within each sheet, the first occurrence of a row is kept and all later identical rows are deleted. Rows are never merged, summed, or reordered — the output preserves the original order of the surviving rows.
The output is a value-level .xlsx rebuilt from your data: cell styles, column widths, merged cells, and charts are simplified. If you need formatting preserved, open the file in our online editor and remove duplicates there instead.
When You Need This
- Merging contact or mailing lists from two sources and ending up with the same people twice.
- Cleaning CRM, e-commerce, or analytics exports that contain repeated rows from overlapping date ranges.
- Deduplicating form or survey responses after a double submission.
- Preparing data before import — many systems reject files that contain duplicate records.
This Tool vs Excel’s Built-in Remove Duplicates
| Feature | This tool | Excel built-in |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | In your browser — no Excel needed | Requires a desktop Excel install |
| What is compared | Whole rows, all columns | Whole rows or any column subset you pick |
| Cell formatting | Simplified (values only) | Fully preserved |
| Report | Per-sheet before/after counts | One summary dialog |
| Cost and privacy | Free, file never uploaded | Free with Excel, stays local |
Limitations
- Whole-row matching only — deduplicating by selected columns (e.g. “same email address”) is not supported here; use the online editor for that.
- Formatting, formulas, and charts are simplified in the output file.
- Encrypted workbooks (password required to open) cannot be read.
- Legacy .xls files are supported, but are converted to .xlsx on output.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this duplicate remover really free?
Yes — 100% free, with no sign-up, no watermark, and no file limit. All processing happens in your browser.
Which rows count as duplicates?
Rows where every cell is identical across the full width of the sheet, after normalizing dates and empty cells. The first occurrence is kept; later identical rows are removed.
What happens to my header row?
With “First row is a header” enabled (the default), the first row of each sheet is always kept and is never compared against data rows.
Will my formatting be preserved?
No — the output is rebuilt from cell values, so styles, column widths, and merged cells are simplified. Use the online editor if formatting matters.
Can I remove duplicates based on one column only?
Not in this tool — matching always spans the whole row. Open the file in the free online editor to deduplicate by selected columns.
Is my file uploaded to a server?
No. The workbook is parsed, deduplicated, and rebuilt entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Your file never leaves your device.
Does it work with encrypted files?
No. A workbook that demands a password before opening is genuinely encrypted and cannot be read without it.
Which formats are supported?
.xlsx, .xlsm, and legacy .xls. The result is always downloaded as a modern .xlsx file.
