How to Remove Empty Columns from Excel Online

  1. Drop one .xlsx, .xlsm, or .xls workbook — everything runs locally and is never uploaded.
  2. Choose how emptiness is decided. With “Treat whitespace-only columns as empty” enabled (the default), columns containing only spaces are removed too; turn it off to keep them.
  3. Choose whether the first row is a header. With the option on (the default), the header row is skipped during the empty-column scan, so a column with an empty header but real data below is kept.
  4. Click Remove empty columns — every sheet is scanned, empty columns are deleted, and the remaining columns close the gaps in their original order.
  5. Download the clean .xlsx file named your-file-name-no-empty-columns.xlsx.

What Counts as an Empty Column

A column is removed only when every scanned cell in it is empty. A single value — even in the last row, and including 0 or a date — keeps the whole column. There are two detection modes:

Cell contentStrict mode (whitespace off)Whitespace mode (on, default)
null / empty cellEmptyEmpty
Empty string ""EmptyEmpty
Spaces or tabsNot empty — column is keptEmpty — column is removed
NBSP / full-width space ( / )Not empty — column is keptEmpty — column is removed
0, dates, formulas with resultsNot emptyNot empty

When “First row is a header” is enabled, the header row does not take part in the decision: a column whose header cell is missing but whose data rows contain values is kept, while a column with a header label but completely empty data rows is still removed.

When You Need This

  • CSV or text exports that carry dozens of trailing empty columns because the source range was wider than the data.
  • After combining or pasting datasets side by side, leaving blank separator columns between blocks.
  • Reports from accounting or BI tools padded with spacer columns for visual layout.
  • Before importing a file into a database or CRM that counts every column, including blank ones.
  • Before converting a workbook to CSV or JSON, so the output fields line up with real data.

The output is a value-level .xlsx rebuilt from your data: cell styles, column widths, merged cells, and charts are simplified. If you need every format preserved, open the file in our online editor and delete the columns there instead.

Limitations

  • Only whole columns are removed — there is no per-row or range-based cleanup here.
  • Formatting, formulas (kept as their cached values), and charts are simplified in the output.
  • When “First row is a header” is on, a column whose data rows are all empty is removed even if the header cell contains text.
  • Encrypted workbooks (password required to open) cannot be read.
  • Legacy .xls files are supported, but are converted to .xlsx on output.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this empty-column remover really free?

Yes — 100% free, with no sign-up, no watermark, and no file limit. All processing happens in your browser.

What counts as an empty column?

A column where every scanned cell is empty (null or an empty string in strict mode). A single value anywhere, including 0 or a date, keeps the whole column.

What is the difference between the two modes?

Strict mode treats only null and the empty string as empty. Whitespace mode (the default) also removes columns that contain nothing but spaces, tabs, NBSP, or full-width spaces.

What happens to my header row?

With “First row is a header” enabled (the default), the first row is excluded from the scan: an empty header cell with data below keeps the column, while all-empty data rows remove the column even when the header has text.

Does the column order change?

No. The surviving columns keep their original order — deleting empty columns only closes the gaps between them.

Will my formatting be preserved?

No — the output is rebuilt from cell values, so styles, column widths, and merged cells are simplified. Use the online editor if formatting matters.

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. The workbook is parsed, compressed, and rebuilt entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Your file never leaves your device.

Does it work with encrypted files and which formats are supported?

A workbook that demands a password before opening is genuinely encrypted and cannot be read. Supported inputs are .xlsx, .xlsm, and legacy .xls; the result is always downloaded as .xlsx.
